The AV night of the Sydney Liquid Architecture, where Kamusta performed, was headlined by French act, Cellule d’Intervention Metamkine. The trio thrilled the audience with their celluloid manipluations- using mirrors, lights, shadows and synths to create an engrossing live film performance.

The whole evening highlighted the rift in AV performance work bewteen expanded cinema and more digital based stuff. Like Metamkine, Brisbanites Abject Leader also work with 16mm projectors in the expanded cinema mode, whereas the other performers on the night, Llyod Barrett, Sydney-based Peter Newman and Kamusta, sit on the digital side of the spectrum.

I think we will start to see these two traditions bleed into each other more and more, as the retro expanded cinema stuff continues to enjoy popularity and the digital vj work moves further out of the club scene towards a more cinematic aesthetic.

If you’re in Sydney and keen to see more from the Metamkine kids, one of the members- Xavier QuĂ©rel, will be performing some solo shows in Sydney:

Monday, 16 July, at the Now now series at the last bastion of civilization, suite 202, 2nd floor 267-271 Cleveland St, Surry Hills, $8/$10 donation.

Tuesday, 17 July, Don’t Look Experimental New Media Gallery, 419 New Canterbury Rd, Dulwich Hill.

Music video for an old Grandaddy song. Done in BASIC on a 70’s Apple II. I like it.

upcoming performance

We’ll be doing a performance on the evening of the 30th of June at the Liquid Architecture festival at Performance Space in Redfern in Sydney. Its part of a great looking night of AV performances as part of the festival. We’ll be doing a new twin screen piece with a strong spoken word element. The theatre at Performance Space is a fantastic venue for a what we are doing with a huge 8 metre main screen & knowing Shannon & Ben undoubtably a great sound system.
